It may come as a surprise to some motoring fans that an OEM fuel pump is not a strict necessity for a good number of automobiles and motorcycles.
However, for the vast majority of motorized vehicles today, sturdy and dependable pumps are definitely a must-have.
Fuel pumps are designed expressly to deliver fuel from a holding tank to an internal combustion engine.
However, there are many older designs that don't require these specialized pieces of equipment.
These are mostly older engine models, usually for motorcycles, that rely on a gravity feed to push gasoline, diesel or any other form of liquid fuel to their combustion chambers.
There are two obvious drawbacks to this method of fuel delivery, though.
One is that the fuel tank must necessarily be placed higher on the vehicle than the engine.
This naturally places certain restrictions on the overall design of the vehicle, compromising other factors such as aesthetics and aerodynamics.
The second drawback is that the performance of any engine is limited to the volume of fuel that it can draw from the tank.
For a gravity-fed design, the flow of fuel is much weaker when compared to a pump-fed engine.
Engine designs that are assisted by pumps can generate higher and more consistent horsepower and torque figures, thanks to a steady supply of fuel at regulated volumes.
For owners of vehicles equipped with pumps for fuelling, this is most definitely good news.
Of course, for maximum day-to-day reliability, an ailing OEM fuel pump must be replaced only with one that either meets or exceeds the original pump's quality and performance levels.
