About Online CNA Training

    Function

    • Online training programs are designed to provide a CNA with the skills and knowledge to pass the state certification exam. Topics of a CNA include patient rights, ethics, anatomy, physiology and therapy. CNA skills are generally basic and involve hand washing, checking vital signs and assisting residents in daily living activities such as walking and eating. The CNA certification exam composes of a clinical portion and a 55 multiple-choice-question test. The clinical portion consists of five CNA skills.

    Requirements

    • Online CNA programs require students have basic computer skills and have time to complete the assignments. Students must also meet the basic requirements to become a CNA, which includes passing a background check and tuberculosis test.

    Features

    • Students must complete 75 state-approved training hours before taking the CNA exam. Most online CNA programs also have a clinical training portion which is done in either a nursing home or hospital. During the clinical portion students follow a CNA or a registered nurse (RN) and assist them in their duties. Students are required by law to be observed by a health care professional while performing any duties.

    Benefits

    • Online CNA programs are significantly more flexible than regular training programs. Many programs have strict attendance policies, because students must complete 75 state approved training hours before taking the CNA exam. If students are unable to attend class, they are rejected from the program and must apply again. Many programs do not refund the students' money if they are rejected. Online students do not face this problem because online CNA programs allow students to complete the program on their schedule.

    Considerations

    • Online CNA programs are significantly more expensive than regular CNA programs. In addition, online CNA programs generally do not have job placement guarantees after their certification exam. In contrast, many CNA programs based in nursing homes or hospitals guarantee their students employment upon passing the state certification exam.
