What Other Kinds of Drum Machines Are Like the ER-1?

    Electribe EA1

    • The progenitor of the Electribe analog modeling synth series, the EA1 was an inexpensive starter synth. It doesn't come equipped with some of the more familiar features of a traditional analog synth, such as robust filters and LFO controls. It does allow recording of two sequences in each pattern as well as motion sequences which can record real-time knob manipulation.

    Electribe ES1

    • The followup to the ER1 was the ES1, which was distinguished by the same aluminum fascia spotted with rubber knobs with a green faceplate surrounding the digital display. Though physically it was the same, it was labeled a rhythm production synthesizer. With that moniker came the ability to sample, which is as simple as plugging the audio source into the ES1's input, setting the levels, then hitting "Play" to sample and "Stop" when finished. The tradeoff is that it comes with no automatic sample trigger so that any unwanted space on the sample has to be done manually, which can be a tad tricky.

    Electribe MX1

    • After a slate of releases for an MKII model for the EA1, ER1 and the ES1 and the release of the ESX1 music production sampler, Korg released the Electribe EMX1. Continuing in the dance-based tradition of its predecessors, the EMX1 was officially labeled a music production station. It resembles the look and feel of previous models on its face but has marked differences. The first is an all-metal casing in a blue finish. Second, it has two vacuum tubes located at the top center, allowing for valve warmth to saturate sounds and songs. Third, it introduced a new name for the sound generating system, called MMT, or multi-modeling technology. This means physical modeling, though it has sampled waveforms to take care of some drum sounds and synth-oscillator functions.

    Electribe SX1SD

    • The latest in the series is the Electribe SX1SD, which looks like its predecessor in format but is more powerful in many respects. First, it sports SD storage capability up to 32 GB, where a host of additional sounds can be stocked and hoarded. It also includes a built-in beats-per-minute detection algorithm, which can adjust the tempo to match that of a connected audio device.
