- 1). Walk around the back of the business or home or the immediate area near the safe. Make sure that no one unauthorized is in the vicinity.
- 2). Secure all doors that open into the safe area. Be as certain as possible that no one will have access to you and the safe as long as the safe is open.
- 3). Inform employees in the vicinity that you will be opening the safe, and for them to not open any doors until you have authorized it.
- 4). Gather your calculator, safe count form, pen and any other equipment you will need while the safe is open. You may not leave the area when the safe is open to retrieve any forgotten equipment, so bring it all beforehand.
- 5). Input the numbers into your safe face. You may have an older safe with a dial, in which case you will turn the dial to the left to a certain number, then to the right past that number to a second number, and then back left to a third number. If you have a newer safe with a keypad, enter the series of numbers on the keys and then press "Enter" or place your safe key on the appropriate keypad, if needed.
- 6). Listen for the click or beep; any sound that indicates safe is ready to open. Grasp the handle firmly and pull it down. The lock will open and you will now be able to open the safe door.
