IV Training
- Intravenous training includes instruction on the basic anatomy of the circulatory system; the types and functions of equipment used in intravenous therapy; management and prevention of complications which may arise as the result of intravenous therapy; legal and ethical implications of intravenous therapy; and practical applications such as vein selection and psychological care of the patient. Intravenous training may culminate with training in the clinical setting.
- Intravenous training prepares nurses for safely and effectively administering intravenous therapy in a clinical setting. Because intravenous therapy may result in a number of complications, including cellulitis, phlebitis, infiltration and circulatory overload, and has the potential to result in the spread of blood-borne diseases if improperly practiced, proper training is necessary in order for its safe and ethical administration.
- Registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and any other clinicians who undergo intravenous training are commonly required to complete a full semester class in order to receive IV certification.
