How Much Bleach & Water Mixture Should I Use to Clean Mold Under My Kitchen Sink?
- Bleach, a biocide that kills fungus organisms and mold spores is a strong solvent that can irritate your hands, eyes and lungs. You should only use bleach when working in a well-ventilated area and are wearing rubber gloves, goggles and a dust mask. Only use it if other cleaning solutions don't work.
- Straight bleach is not only highly toxic and irritating, it can actually dissolve and weaken areas of your home where you apply it. Prevent this by diluting the bleach before using it. Use 1 cup of bleach per gallon of water. This creates a solution strong enough to kill mold spores under the kitchen sink and loosen their grip on surfaces.
- There are several ways you can apply the bleach solution to the mold under your kitchen sink. You can spray it on the mold with a spray bottle or apply it with a scrub brush or sponge. Use any method, but be aware that airborne bleach can irritate your lungs and that any bleach you drip on carpets could take the color out of the carpet. Let the bleach sit for several minutes so it has time to loosen the mold growth.
- Wipe up the bleach solution with clean cloths or paper towels to remove most of the mold. To remove remaining mold, scrub it up with a nylon-bristle scrubbing brush to avoid scratches. Wipe up the remaining mold and rinse the area with clear water.
