    • 1). Take the civil service exam for NYPD candidates. Prepare for the exam by reviewing material on the NYPD website. You will be ranked by your score on the exam, and this will determine whether, and how soon, you will be called to continue with the induction process.

    • 2). Pass a battery of initial interviews and evaluations, including character and psychological assessments. You must produce proof of successful completion of at least 60 credits from an accredited college or university. Take a final character assessment and a written psychological exam. If you pass all of these requirements you may be called upon to become a police officer.

    • 3). Complete your probationary period successfully while gaining knowledge about law enforcement and police procedure. After a probationary period, which can last for several years, request a transfer to an investigative unit. Work in the narcotics division is considered good preparation for advancement to detective because of the kinds of cases you will work on and the experience you will receive.

    • 4). Request a promotion to detective after at least 18 months in an investigative unit.
