Many of these tourists staying in the city not only visit it, but use it as a base for their excursions, and in the many nearby resorts, easily reachable with your vehicle by public transport. The ancient, pagan, buried about six meters of ash and lava after an eruption of Vesuvius in August of AD 79 where many people died. In the sixteenth century was discovered almost by accident during the construction of an aqueduct and a sign of what is a plaque near Porta Nocera. Thanks to a special technique designed by the Fiorelli, today we can see the locations where perished Pompeii during the eruption. He invented a method to get casts, by pouring liquid plaster into the void left by the now dissolved bodies; these casts, are a testimony to the tragic catastrophe. In addition, many discoveries of paintings, pottery, furniture and various tools help us to understand the habits and customs of the ancient Pompeii, but only a visit to the site we will be able to transmit strong emotions.
The new Pompeii, Christian, was born thanks to the work of Blessed Bartolo Longo. Lawyer from Puglia who in 1872 was commissioned by the Countess Marianna De Fusco to manage their property in the Valley of Pompeii. The apparition of the Madonna pushed Bartolo Longo to build, among many difficulties and with limited funds, the Sanctuary, a city developing around it. One of the obstacles that he found was that place from some neighboring countries, reluctant to cede a portion of its territory to be born the new reality "the new Pompeii." Unfortunately for the arrival of his death, October 5, 1926, Bartolo Longo could not witness the birth of the new municipality which occurred March 29, 1928, through the efforts of Brother Hadrian, who had the merit to continue with tenacity, the project undertaken the Blessed One.
