How to Make Balsam & Cedar Candles

    • 1). Choose beeswax or paraffin for your candle. Beeswax is more expensive but is natural and burns slowly. Paraffin is a petroleum by-product, is less expensive but burns faster.

    • 2). Grate or chop your wax into small pieces and place them in a double boiler. Weigh your wax on a kitchen scale to keep track of how much you are putting into the pot. You will not be able to use this vessel for cooking after melting wax in it, so if you prefer you can use a coffee can inside of an old pot you don't mind ruining.

    • 3). Keep the flame on low so that the water simmers rather than boils. If the water boils, lower the heat. Melt enough wax to fill your jar. Add 3 tbsp. of stearic acid per pound of wax.

    • 4). Add the dye if you would like your candle to be colored. Mix it until it is evenly distributed.

    • 5). Add some cedar fragrance oil and powdered cinnamon to the wax. Stir it to fully incorporate it. Add a little at a time, sniffing as you go along, until the candle is scented as strongly as you desire.

    • 6). Cut the wick to be a couple of inches longer than your jar. Attach the wick to the wick tab.

    • 7). Put on a heat-proof kitchen glove or mitt to hold the jar. Pour a small amount of wax on the bottom of the jar. Take the wick from the top and lower it into the jar. Press the wick tab into place on the bottom of the jar in the center. Use a spoon or a piece of wire hanger to move it into place if necessary. Give the wax a few minutes to set the wick in place.

    • 8). Stir the melted wax in the pot one more time to ensure the ingredients haven't settled to the bottom. Pour the wax into the jar, almost to the top. Wrap the top of the wick around a pencil or piece of wire, without pulling it up, to keep it standing straight.

    • 9). Allow the wax to harden. If the wax forms a well that sinks in around the wick, top it off with a bit more wax. Allow the candle to dry. Trim the wick to be about 1/2 inch from the top of the wax.
