- 1). Research local requirements to be an exterminator. On a national level, exterminators fall under the jurisdiction of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and follow the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). On a local level, contact your state's Department of Agriculture or Environmental Protection to determine additional requirements. Typically, a prospective exterminator has to be at least 18 years old and should have a clean criminal record, especially regarding crimes involving terrorism or the environment.
- 2). Complete educational requirements, which vary from state to state. Although some states may not require a high school diploma or its equivalent, virtually all exterminators must read, write and speak English. Some states may also require a prospective exterminator to complete a training course or an apprenticeship under a licensed exterminator.
- 3). Pass written exams required in your state. Typically there are two types of tests. One is known as a core exam and tests the applicant's knowledge of the proper application of pesticides. The other is a category exam, and it is focuses more on the type of pest control the applicant wants to undertake. Some states also require an oral and a practical (field) exam.
- 4). Apply to different companies. Your education and certification improves employment opportunities. If you plan to start your own company, obtain equipment and transportation and register your business with the state. Advertise and build a client base.
- 5). Obtain liability insurance if you plan to be self-employed. If you work for an exterminating company, make sure it is properly insured. Liability insurance is required to be an exterminator.
