How to Be a Standout Transfer Applicant

104 34
  • 1). Maintain good grades in school. Strive to achieve a high GPA before you apply as a transfer student to demonstrate your commitment to hard work and your ability to excel in school. Devote adequate time to studying before each class period.

  • 2). Become acquainted with one or two of your professors. Sit in the front row, participate in class discussions and take advantage of your professor's office hours to demonstrate your desire to succeed in school. Your professors' impression of you would likely influence their decision to write a convincing recommendation letter for you. Ask for recommendation letters several weeks (or months) ahead of the application due date.

  • 3). Get involved in extracurricular activities. Volunteer and participate in school-related activities such as academic clubs, service organizations, sports and music to show the transfer school that you are a well-rounded individual. Request a high profile internship in a field of interest to show that you have a good work ethic and a desire to succeed in your prospective career.

  • 4). Contact the school to schedule a campus visit. Talk to students, faculty and admissions officers during your campus visit.

  • 5). Contact one of the school's admissions officers to find out when they begin accepting applications for transfer students. Apply early to beat the majority of other transfer student applications and to get an admission decision before the regular notification date.
