How to Adjust the Temperature on a Moen Shower Valve

    • 1). Turn the shower handle or knob to the hottest setting. Turn the shower on and let it run for a few minutes to expel all of the cool water from the hot water supply lines. Check the temperature of the water with a thermometer to determine if the temperature setting must be raised or lowered. Turn the shower off.

    • 2). Remove the decorative cap from the face of the knob or the screw cap from the base of the handle, depending on which Moen shower fixture you have, by prying it off with a flat blade screwdriver.

    • 3). Loosen and remove the retaining screw from the knob with a Phillips screwdriver or loosen the set screw on the handle with a hex key wrench, again depending on which model you have.

    • 4). Pull the knob or handle straight off of the shower fixture and place it aside. Pull the temperature limit stop, a ring-shaped piece revealed after removing the handle, slightly out of the shower fixture.

    • 5). Rotate the temperature limit stop in a counterclockwise direction to increase the water temperature and in a clockwise direction to lower the water temperature. Push the stop back into the shower fixture until it is seated fully.

    • 6). Push the handle or knob back into place temporarily and check the hot water temperature as you did previously. Remove the handle or knob and adjust the temperature limit stop again if the temperature still is not to your liking. Repeat as many times as necessary.

    • 7). Replace the knob and its retaining screw or the handle onto the shower fixture over the temperature limit stop. Tighten the knob retaining screw with a Phillips screwdriver or the handle set screw with a hex key wrench.
