How to Prepare for a Government Job Interview
- 1). Edit your public profiles on social networking sites. Delete all pictures, comments, links and conversations that appear to condone criminal activity, profanity, pornography or other lewd behavior. CareerBuilder, a job search site, recommends utilizing privacy features on websites to control who has access to the information on your social networking profiles.
- 2). Research relevant issues in current and archived news. Read about current affairs in local and national newspapers, paying special attention to articles involving the government agency to which you are applying. Also read about issues that impact the agency's work. Read archived newspaper articles at libraries or on newspaper websites to get a sense of the history and background of the agency.
- 3). Write down anticipated questions. Identify weak areas in your resume or cover letter in terms of experience, education and gaps between employment. Pay special attention to issues that may arise during a background check, such as time spent in prison or being fired from a job. USA Jobs notes that for government positions that require security clearance, investigations are not conducted until the job is offered---but glaring issues may be discussed during the interview.
- 4). Rehearse responses to anticipated questions. Stand in front of a mirror and verbalize thoughtful, honest, concise responses to likely questions. Practice making eye contact.
- 5). Make multiple copies of your resume, cover letter and other materials. Use high quality paper in white, ivory or other related colors. Some interviews, especially interviews for jobs in government agencies with complicated bureaucracies, are conducted by multiple people at the same time. Bring extra copies for them and yourself.
- 6). Prepare a list of questions for the interviewers. Use the information found in your research of the news and the agency to craft relevant, timely questions that reflect your knowledge of the agency and position. Highlight your creativity and thoughtfulness through your choice of questions.
