Dextrose Safety in Sweeteners
- Dextrose is derived from glucose and produced from crystallized starch. The technical term for dextrose is dextrose monohydrate.
- Dextrose is added to artificial sweeteners and packaged foods to mimic the taste of real sugar.
- Dextrose is also called corn sugar on product packaging. It is found in artificial sweeteners and packets like "Splenda" and used in processed mixes and snacks like pretzels and baked goods.
- Dextrose adds about five filler categories to the artificial sweetener. The body absorbs it quickly, making it a preferred energy source for endurance athletes.
- There are no safety concerns associated with dextrose but, like any sugar, it should be consumed in moderation only. Pregnant women should limit their use of all artificial sweeteners, including those with dextrose.
