1. Cutting Machine


There are various types of machines such as the Silhouette and Circuit available that can be used to cut out a custom design out paper, cardstock, vinyl, specialty paper and fabrics. With these machines you can either download pre-made cutting designs or make your own, and machine will do all the intricate cutting for you.


2. Guillotine Paper Cutter


Place your sheet of paper beside the edge and pres down to cut with the large blade. These paper cutters provide a flat base so you can easily measure your paper to cut to the correct size on the ruler grid. To use you swing the the large blade  down and it gives one swift cut that allows you to put a bit of force down when cutting through a several thick pieces of paper. Some guillotine paper cutters allow the blade to be replaced, while others require the blade to be sent to be sharpened.


3. Rotating Paper Cutter


Like the guillotine paper cutter there is a flat base with a ruler grid to measure paper before you cut. The main difference is instead of one large blade there is a small rotating blade that you move up and down to cut. Various replacement blades are available for rotating paper cutters including scoring blades for scoring marks for folds on things like cards.


4. Rotating Cutter


The spinning blade is similar to a pizza cutter in use and allows you to make one long fluid cut as you roll the cutter on your path. This type of blade often can work on fabric or paper but is not suitable for intricate cuts.


5. X-acto


A small sharp blade used to cut out detailed patterns or designs. Used with a ruler an x-acto blade is a great way to cut a straight line. The narrow blade is also perfect for cutting intricate details, such as stencils.


6. Craft Knife


Similar to the x-acto blade craft knifes can be used as an x-acto to cut a straight line with a ruler or for freehand cutting. The main difference between ax-acto blade and a craft knife  is the craft knife will allow you to adjust the length of the blade allowing you to cut through thicker materials.


7. Cutting Mat


A flat mat similar to the base on the paper cutters, cutting mats have a ruler grid to help easily measure paper. These cutting mats are used to help protect the surface you are cutting on and are designed to be used when cutting with a craft knife, x-acto or rotating cutter.


8. Stamp Punch


A stamp that cuts out a shape in paper, such as heart, butterfly, or wavy edge. Used to decorate papers for scrap booking, cards or invitations.


9. Fabric or Craft Scissors


It is recommended to have one pair of sharp scissors in addition to your all purpose scissors to use just when you need a sharp blade to cut fabric or paper. Craft scissors are also available with a variety of specialty blades that cut out different patterns such as zig zags or waves to decorate the edges of paper.


10. Clay Wire Cutter


A piece of wire with two handles that you use to cut through modelling clay, or modeling craft products such as plasticine. Simply place the wire directly underneath where you want the cut to be, and holding the two handles life up to divide the clay into pieces.
