Things to Do at Rottnest Island
Rottnest Island is an incredible place around 12km from Perth.
It is well known for picture perfect beaches, plenty of great reef to dive on, fishing, surfing and relaxing across the island.
There is a bakery that is well worth the visit, as well as a few other basic shops.
Accommodation ranges from basic huts through to units and some more luxury options.
To get to Rottnest Island, you have to either fly in a plane or helicopter, or go by boat.
The most common way to get there is by ferry, which leaves from Fremantle, Hillaries and Perth.
These are operated by a number of different companies, and prices are well worth investigating.
Ferries operate several times a day, usually from 7AM through to 5:30PM.
The beauty of Rottnest Island is that regardless of the weather, you will always find a beach that is calm and perfect for swimming.
If the weather is blowing from one direction, find the beach on the other side and enjoy it! On the other hand, the surfers tend to look for the beaches with the most wind! The best way to get around the island is by bus, which is reasonably cheap.
You can purchase an all day pass and get on and off the bus as required.
The bus travels around the island all day long.
Alternatively, hire a bike and ride your way around the island.
There are a number of hills, but it is a great way to explore the island at your own pace.
If you have a bike in Perth, make sure that you take it with you.
You pay a little more to get the bike over, but they are better (in most cases) than what you can hire on the island.
Make sure you keep an eye out for the quokkas; a very tame animal that resembles a cute, large rat! Please don't feed these though, as they are wild animals and although quite tame need to learn not to rely on human feed! I'd highly recommend some of the tourist attractions; the lighthouse, various beaches, the salt lakes and anything else that the residents recommend.
The best thing to do is to speak to the bus driver; they will point you to the right places based on what the weather is doing on each individual day.
Rottnest Island is truly a magical place, and is well worth at least a day trip, if not to stay for a few days.
