Things to Do for 100 Days of School
- Celebrate 100 days of school with a fun scavenger hunt. Create worksheets asking students to find a specific number of objects which, when added together, lead to 100. For example, ask students to collect five chocolate candies, two toy animals, three erasers, 10 stickers and numbers of other items that add up to 100. Before students arrive, place the items in containers around the room, making sure to set out enough for all students to complete the activity. To avoid crowding during the hunt, select multiple hiding spots for each item. Give each student a bag or box to collect her treasures and a copy of the worksheet.
- Ask students to name 100 of their favorite things, suggests the Scholastic website. Create several displays, each dedicated to a specific object, like 100 favorite foods,100 favorite books or 100 favorite places. Ask students to illustrate or cut out pictures of their favorite things to decorate each display with 100 favorites. Do this activity with the entire class, or ask each student to come up with a certain number of items.
- Ask students to write stories in 100 words, recommends the Scholastic website. Students work as individuals, in small group or as a whole class. Post the stories in the classroom. Alternately, have the class work together and write down 100 words that they know to celebrate 100 days of school. Begin this activity on the first day of school, adding a new word learned each day.
- Have children practice counting to 100 during your 100 days of school celebration. First, ask students to count from one to 100. Next, ask students to skip count by two's, fives and 10s, suggests Scholastic. Give students small items like beads or marbles and ask them to put them in 10 piles of 10, adding up to 100 items in all.
