- 1). Install a fence around the perimeter of your plum trees. A picket fence or chain link fence can be enough protection for your trees. If the bear is particularly large or hungry, it may just knock the fence down. In this case, consider setting up an electrified fence to keep the bears at bay.
- 2). Lay squares of wire fencing down around the base of your plum trees. Bears, among other large garden pests, hate walking on this type of surface and will generally back away from it and leave your fruit trees alone. Secure the fencing to the ground with wooden stakes to prevent removal.
- 3). Set up a perimeter alarm around your garden or orchard. Bears are easily frightened by loud noises and will typically run off if they hear a shrill alarm. However, this method can be cost prohibitive so you may consider making a "homemade alarm" by tying tin cans and glass bottles to your fence. If the bear brushes against the fence, the resulting noise can be enough to scare it off.
- 4). Throw small objects at the bear to scare it off. Don't throw anything that might hurt the bear; small rocks and sticks aimed at the bear's backside should do the trick. Shout and make loud noises as you throw things at it; as stated earlier, bears hate loud noises. You could also try banging together pots and pans, using an airhorn or blowing a shrill whistle to scare the bear away.
