Turning Off the Water Works

One of the main areas in a home to suffer from flooding can be the basement.
The most logical next step of course would be to waterproof the place.
One of the steps would be to use polymer based products.
Since they are resistant to soil pH, they last you a much longer time.
They are also rather effective in wood-eating insects at bay.
For the paints and sealers that you use in the basement, always ensure that they are of the water-proof variety.
In the long run, they will prevent fissures and cracks from appearing.
Make sure that you always keep the exterior portion of your basement clean.
This means that rainwater gutters have to regularly cleared and they have to be positioned a safe distance from the foundation of the house.
What could help with this is a splash block that will direct any excess water away from the foundation.
Now there may be a chance that you have never had basement flooding issues before, but one day come down to see that a wall has turned damp.
The leak may not be visible to you instantly.
What you can do is tape a piece of foil close to the damp wall and seal it as close as possible.
After a few days if you find the inside of the foil wet, then it is a leak in the walls.
If it is on the outside, you have a condensation problem.
If you are planning on doing landscaping for your garden, make sure that the lawn does not slope towards the house.
If allowed, this can end up with rainwater and molten snow collecting near your home and then seeping into the foundation and the basement.
The slope will have to be away from the house at one inch per foot.
Use a good quality lawn grass so that it holds water within it.
If you have a thick growth of greenery close to the walls then chances are that your home is not getting the ventilation it needs.
This automatically applies to the basement as well.
Trim down all the bushes and allow enough of sunlight to get to these spaces.
If you already have a damp basement, then use a humidifier to dry the place up.
Check in on the plumbing of your home.
Small leaks when ignored can result in massive leaks that can destroy your basement.
Paying close attention to detail is the key to good basement waterproofing.
