Lesson #4 - Pitch Speaking Using Musical Scales

103 236
Music and distances are crucial.
The basic distance in music is the octave.
This distance musically speaking is not very long.
Pythagoras, the Greek,is given the credit for discovering this natural occurring phenomenon .
It is believed he discovered this on some earlyform of stringed instrument.
What exactly did he find? The sound of an ascending note seemed to repeat itself at a specific distance musically, only with a higher pitch! This phenomenon would repeat itself indefinitely and the same would happen in descending musical distances.
Before I get to far off the main subject which is pitch speaking let me for the sake of simplicity and brevity say this about the chromatic scale, it encompasses completely all the notes of scales and modes.
These scales and modes are abbreviations of this "mother scale".
If we believe that the human singing voices encompasses 4 and a half octaves and the speaking voice 3 octaves then we have the potential of 54 notes, tones or pitches while singing and 36 notes, tones or pitches while speaking.
That is amazing! Scales, as I said, are musical distances, and this interaction of distances is what makes music interesting and recognizable!Very quickly all beginning musicians find out these numerous scales come in different orders of notes, steps or intervals.
Scales are what give music it's "flavor" , for example the pentatonic scale made up of five steps is often called the "country western scale".
It fits this category very well because the notes have a country western feel.
The very popular blues scale is relatively easy to understand, and has always had a great appeal to many younger musicians.
To make matters a little more complicated for the beginning musician are the existence of a secondary group of scales or modes.
These are in fact scales within scales.
These with a little patience and thought can be at least understood and in time mastered.
Remember each scale or mode has its own unique sound.
Where does pitch speaking come in?You can apply pitch speaking to any or all of the scales or modes.
Solfege or solfeggio is one option and a good one, although, I prefer to invent or create words for each scale.
I make the words relevant to music or pitch speaking and it can be as easy as a sentence from a music book, if you cannot come up with something original.
Let's start again with the "mother of all scales", the chromatic or "colorful scale".
To pitch speak the chromatic scale you have options.
One is to use solfeggio, which goes like this: do di re ri mi fa fi sol si la li ti do, and then you begin again, etc.
You can also use numbers, for example 1 -12 in a never ending cycle.
I preferto break up this sentence in syllables:Har mon y is pla cing chords be hind the mel o dy.
The first and last syllable would be the beginning and ending of the octave.
The sound of your corresponding word or syllable should always be in tune.
Check yourself with a fined tuned guitar, keyboard or piano.
Have fun with this!Remember, the rewards for doing this are fantastic! You will be a singer with a better voice and will never be a monotonous speaker!
