Defenseman - A Hockey Player's Story

101 22
The story is for the high school aged to the young at heart! There is a familial brotherhood and a story of camaraderie as the story begins with the promise of a new hockey season at Boston University, the author's alma mater, the story of two brothers Steve and Tony Tommassini! Steve is the All-American everything from BU, an alternate captain on the hockey team and a great guy to be around, he is generally supportive and encouraging to other people!

His brother Tony is special in another way! He is a few years older than Steve and while not a hockey player at BU, he obtained a Business Degree from the school. Tony's fights aren't on the ice but in his mind as he battles mental illness! A writer in the making, Tony also possesses a marketing degree! He is able to support his family while oft and on working on his writing!

Things are going pretty well for both of the brothers when a tragedy occurs! It throws Tony into a deep depression and fearful way of living! Instead of playing the rest of his life in a horrible state! Tony and Steve decide to stick together and in addition to hockey to solidify their relationship, there is a deep respect from Steve to Tony as his older brother fights the disease. In addition to being a hockey player, Steve doesn't take his brother on as reluctant responsibility on his way to superstardom. He truly loves and admires his brother as a man that has an illness and that sometimes he is Tony his brother and sometimes, Tony takes a rest from that role.

The on ice action has the ability to bring cheers to the reader's feet and take even the average hockey fan to a different world! Mr. Maloni brings the speed and intelligence of a game and those who play it that are often compared to skating Neanderthals. College hockey is much more than shoot pucks and skating like demons! At the creditable institutions, like Boston University, players comprehend and accept the fact that grades get them ice time!

In addition to being a hockey player, Steve, comes up with an idea. They don't get paid for internships anyway so why not doing it on their own! The result is an ambidextrous project that involves some of his teammates and other college students he could find who would be interested and make the cut! There are two possibilities that could come out successful completion of his dual ideas -- a sports photography museum and a new sports journalism magazine! If anything, the timing, due to dramatic license is condensed but the sometimes miraculous enjoyment of watching the "process" may be fanciful to some but maybe someday, not so! Tony also becomes involved but is chased the demons of being associated with the project because Steve was giving him a break.

The story has many living examples of "regular people mental illness" rather than "six o'clock news mental illness." Tony is the difference himself, all people have anger, fear, and rage, in a mentally ill person, and sometimes they are out of control! Tony's problems are different, depression, self-doubt and a brother, as nice as he is but is all-world! Both manage to avoid human frailty to not only salvage a brother, as nice as he is but is all-world! Both manage to avoid human frailty to not only salvage a relationship but explore new and entertaining ways to enjoy life! A fierce independence develops in Tony and he holds jobs on his own! It much confuses Steve as the hockey player turned intern, thinks after graduation that his brother and he can begin a new life professionally!

Steve could have walked away from the relationship and said that the doctors would have to handle it! After all he was on the fast track! His life was set as long as he kept doing what he was doing! As you see the story unfold, you will understand why that doesn't happen to the relationship.

The author has exposure to mental illness in a way! He has three illnesses and an endocrine condition that contributes to it! To be honest, this is my first attempt at publication fully medicated and taking treatment seriously! Mr. Maloni had 14 unpublished novels previously but they were mostly, "really bad," by his account! This one was his first, best effort and although proud of it, knows he is improving in gradients with his next novel, Shortstop: Where Grace and Power Collide!

A wise man, named Mark Twain once said, "Write what you know about." Mr. Maloni has always admired sports as the cog in his wheel! He understands the world that way! If you read this story and understand the character development and group dynamics of the characters in the story then, you have gotten something out of the story! Mr. Maloni would like to thank Eloquent Books for the opportunity to be presented to a willing readership! He would like you to be on the look out for his latest novel, Penn State Blue, about college football as it can be at Penn State University!

With or without mental illness, writing is a challenge but the real truth is, as the poet Eugene O'Neil said, "Writer's write because they can't help themselves." Mr. Maloni wishes all the encouragement in the world to people of the pen, paper, keyboard, touch screen, or chalk board! You write 1,000 times on the blackboard, "I will be a writer someday." After that, everything is easy!

Good luck and pick your medium to do the job!
