Dear Sir/Madam,

I saw an advertisement that your company has a job opening. I believe that I am highly qualified for the position as I have good analytical skills and sound reasoning. I am a dedicated worker and I endeavor to achieve my goals.

I have enclosed my resume to elaborate further about my skills and experience.

First and foremost Mr. Job Seeker already committed one crucial mistake at the beginning of his cover letter. Though his cover letter is short, it is not concise and complete. Apparently, he did not research about the company he is applying to, he says he is fit for the job but does not say how. The proper way to write the cover letter is to address it to the hiring manager or employer, not to just anyone in the company.

Another mistake is that he mentioned the skills that most people have. This does not make him stand out at all. What made him qualified for the job? We don't know because he didn't say anything. What job position did he apply for? The company could have publicised several openings from a janitorial position to a vice president of sales. It is always recommended to tailor your cover letter according to the job position you are applying for.

In addition, though he stated he is a hard worker and he endeavors to achieve his goals, he will still not get a job interview as most job applicants usually state that in their cover letters. Frankly, everyone is a hard worker in their own definition. When stating these words, make sure you can back it up using past work experience.

Another big mistake that our young man committed is submitting his hoped-for salary. In this economic downfall, most companies have low budget and as much as possible they would save cost on employee's salaries. Expressing your desired salary on a cover letter is not highly recommended unless the company has stated otherwise. Salary talks should be discussed during your job interview. Instead of telling your salary, it is better to shortly mention your capabilities and your future contribution to the company. Be compelling and elicit interest. Another thing is to include at the end of your cover letter when you will be available for interview.
