Identification

• The first way to protect against electrical hazards is to identify them. Before beginning any type of project, survey the area for overhead power lines or underground conductors. OSHA says that utilities can be contacted to find out where buried electrical lines exist.
  
  

Distance

• Keeping a safe distance from electrical lines is essential in protecting against electrical incidents. OSHA recommends staying at least 10 feet away from overhead power lines. Getting too close increases the risk of electrocution. Additionally, power lines must always be treated as if they are energized.
  
  

Uses

• Employees can be protected from electrical hazards by always using electrical devices in the proper way that they are intended to be used. OSHA says that using electrical equipment for uses for which it was not designed no longer guarantees that its safety features will protect against electrical incidents as outlined by the equipment's manufacturer. Additionally, the cords or wires attached to electrical equipment must not be modified. If cords and wires are frayed or worn, they must be replaced.
