How to Sleep Better During the Day

    • 1). Prepare your body for sleep by winding down. It does not matter what the rest of the world is doing if it is time for you to sleep. You will want your body to be in a relaxed mode. Sip a cup of bedtime tea, read a book, or apply some lavender-scented lotion. Whatever you would do at night, employ it during the day when you are planning to go to sleep.

    • 2). Dress for bed. Change out of your jeans and t-shirt and put on your pajamas. If you are uncomfortable, you will be less relaxed and less likely to fall asleep. You will also be less likely to snuggle under your bed covers if you are fully dressed.

    • 3). Make your bedroom dark. Make sure you draw the curtains or blinds to prevent as much light as possible from entering your room. If it is still too bright, consider purchasing black-out shades, curtains or blinds for your room. These can be purchased at most curtain stores such as JC Penny and are designed to block light from entering into your room.

    • 4). Decrease daytime noise so that it does not interrupt your sleep. If you are a heavy sleeper, you may be fine sleeping regardless of the noise level. But if you are not, you may find yourself constantly being awakened. Try wearing foam ear plugs in your ears to help reduce noise. These are very easy to wear and can be found at most drug stores such as Walgreens. Additionally, you may want to turn on your fan as a source of white noise to help lull you to sleep. You could also purchase a sound machine alarm clock and drown out the noises of the day with the sound of raindrops, waterfalls, chirping birds or ocean waves.

    • 5). Inform your family or roommates that you will be sleeping during the day and ask for their consideration. This way they will be aware and likely to either leave the house or at least keep the volume down.
