Do it Yourself Surveillance Cameras
- 1). Select an appropriate camera. Consider how many cameras you will need, if you need an outdoor safe camera, determine the lighting conditions; select a black and white camera if there is poor lighting.
- 2). Select a position for your camera. Consider positions that have a view of gathering space, entrances, exits and location of your valuables.
- 3). Mount your cameras on the above selected positions. Drill holes on the ceilings and place the cameras in them or on tall furniture. You can also use a dry anchor bolt to hold the camera in position. The higher you place the camera the wider the view angle.
- 4). Choose a DVR recording system. You can purchase a dedicated DVR with a monitor or purchase a DVR card for your computer. Ask a professional to install the DVR into your computer. The DVR options allow for a large amount of data storage but are quite expensive. A cheaper option is the DVD interface; it connects to your computer through a USB port and stores less data but enough for an average property owner.
- 5). Run the camera RCA cable to the recording device for a wired surveillance system; keep the wires hidden to avoid system hacking. For a wireless system, position the transmitter at a range of 300 miles to 5 feet from the camera and the receiver. Ensure the transmitter is free of obstructions like walls, baby monitors and home furniture. Connect the receiver to the recording device (TV or computer).
- 6). Download security software that allows you to record and view the videos in your computer. Ranges of option are available for purchase or for free. Ensure your computer uses Windows for software compatibility purposes
- 7). Plug in the camera(s), computer and DVR to a power source and switch them on.
