iPods in Education
Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran School students have been bringing their iPods to school lately.
And their iPhones.
And their iPads.
They aren't using them for texting or phone calls, though.
They are using them in class to learn new concepts and reinforce concepts they've already learned.
Students and teachers alike are finding the devices to be very helpful.
What benefits do students enjoy when using iPods in education?Students can review information that they learned in class.
They can learn new information.
They can practice drawing their letters, and hear the letters read aloud.
They can search for detailed information on a number of topics.
The benefits are almost endless, depending on which apps you put to work.
The most important idea is that iPods are fun to use.
Shepherd of the Hills' students are happy to study and practice their subjects because they feel like they are using toys.
When they are asked to bring iPods to school to use in class, they are thrilled.
Additionally, there is not much of a learning curve.
Many students already know how to use them because they have their own iPod or iPhone.
They already listen to music, browse the Internet, and play games, so using the iPod in education is second nature.
However, iPods in education are used as tools, not toys.
There are thousands of educational apps available for the iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad.
The rest of this article will showcase a few of the apps we have found to be useful at Shepherd of the Hills.
For students who do not have their own iPods, Shepherd of the Hills has secured a set of iPods and donated iPhones and iPads.
It is fun to see the excitement students experience while learning, and using iPods in education adds to their excitement! Bible What a fantastic app - and it is free!Students read their favorite verses or the Scripture passage that is being studied on a particular day.
Then they change to another translation and compare/contrast the translations.
There are even Spanish translations available - a special treat since every student is also in Spanish class.
iStrobosoft The bands have been tuning their instruments with this tuner app.
It provides incredible accuracy.
It also helps beginners by identifying the pitch they are playing, helping to ensure that they are making the correct sound on the instruments.
Another app that students have found to be helpful (and less expensive) is ClearTune.
iCell Fifth grade students are learning all about plant, animal, and bacterial cells in science class.
This app helps students visualize the different parts of the cell.
Tempo by Frozen Ape Band students "got rhythm", and this app helps them keep it together.
iTick is another metronome app that several students have installed for their use at home.
Rhythm in Reach Can you read music and keep time?That is the question band members are challenging each other with these days.
Lane has over 2000 points, and the others are working to catch up! Instruments in Reach This app provides a handy fingering chart reference for most band instruments.
Fingerings is another good reference for the iPad.
StarWalk You may have seen this one on the iPad commercials.
It is as fun as it looks!Just look at the iPad and the sky - StarWalk will show you the names of the stars and the outlines of the constellations you are seeing.

3D Brain Jr.
High science students also took a look at their brains.
This 3D app allows for interaction that helps students understand where the parts of the brain really are.
