- 1). Close any programs that use the Internet, like file-sharing software or software updates. Wait for active downloads to finish, or cancel them if you want to get started right away.
- 2). Open a Web browser and go to one of the speed test tools linked in the Resources section.
- 3). Select the location that is closest to you, if given an option. Most speed tests automatically pick the nearest location.
- 4). Click the "Begin Test" or "Start" button. The website measures how long your DSL modem takes to download and upload certain files and rates your DSL speed based on how long it took.
