Every writer includes themselves in their stories. It is easy to describe what kind of an author is by reading their works. I have also noticed that writers share common story characteristics with their favorite authors. This may seem obvious, but it is one of those ideas that you never really think about. A writer's style is based off their personality and interests. This leads me into my first piece of advise, know what kind of writer you are. A horror writer would not be the greatest romance novelist. As well as a mystery writer would not have the greatest fan base for his or her's science fiction stories. An author will have more fun writing about what interests him or her. The passion will spark creativity and increase the mood for a writer to write. If you have ever sat down and tried to write anything while in the mindset of hating what you have to write, you know that it is nearly impossible.
The first goal in writing is to know what you want to write about. I prefer comedies so I stick to writing comedies. Its a hobby of mine and I am almost as entertained writing these works as much as the readers that read them. If you are new to writing, I suggest in experimenting with different genres. Write a short story for each genre and see which one you had the most fun writing.
The next step in writing your story can change from person to person. Several of the teachers I have worked under have stated to write stories that revolve around characters, or a setting, or a problem that will be solved during the story. I believe writing is fun and very beneficial to everyone. With that said, I suggest discovering what you want the highlights of your stories to be.
I prefer to write stories that are centered around characters I create. Throughout the day I always notice something or have a thought that I would like to put in a story. When I gather enough of these funny pieces of dialogue and actions, I create the characters that will perform them. Then, I create the setting in which these characters are placed in and the plot soon follows.
In conclusion, before you write a story, figure out what kind of writer you are or want to be. You can do this by experimenting with writing and reading different genres. Once you have your genre, discover your style. Decide how to start your story. You can start it by creating characters, imagining a setting, writing a plot, or whatever piece of the story you favor.
