How to Troubleshoot iPod Transfers
- 1). Check the available memory on your iPod. An inability to transfer content may mean that your iPod hard drive is full or nearing its maximum capacity. For click-wheel iPods, scroll down the main "iPod" menu on your screen and click "Settings." Then click "About" to see how much space you have remaining. For the iPod Touch, tap the "Settings" icon, then tap the "General" tab, followed by the "About" tab. You can also check the capacity by connecting the device to your computer, clicking "iPod" in the left column of the iTunes software window and observing the "Capacity" bar at the bottom of your screen. If your iPod has little space remaining, delete unused content to free up additional space for new media.
- 2). Unplug the iPod USB cable from your computer or USB hub and reconnect it to a different USB port. If transferring content from the computer to the iPod via USB, you may have a weak USB port. Try connecting cable to the next nearest port directly on the computer. Avoid using external USB ports, as they do not contain the same amount of power and may sometimes fail to properly transfer files, according to Apple.
- 3). Check your Wi-Fi connection. If transferring music wirelessly on an iPod Touch from the iTunes Store, you must have an active Wi-Fi connection. Click the "Settings" icon on your iTouch, click the "Wi-Fi" tab and verify that "Wi-Fi" is switched to the "On" position. If the switch reads "Off," tap it once to turn it on. Just below that, verify that a Wi-Fi network appears on the "Network" list with a check mark appearing just to the left, indicating an active connection. If no check mark appears, tap an available network on the list to select it. You may need to enter a password if the network is protected.
- 4). Reset your iPod. If your iPod suffers from any transfer-related functionality issues, or if it currently appears in disk mode, it may just need a quick reboot. For click-wheel iPods, hold down the center button and "Menu" button until the Apple icon appears. For iPod Touch, hold down both buttons on the device until the Apple icon appears.
