    Air Control

    • Dehumidifiers suck enough moisture out of the air to reduce the humidity of a room to around 30 percent. Dust mites prefer humidity levels above 50 percent,; the lower humidity reduces their water source and will slowly kill them off. A dehumidifier should be run during the day even if you're not in the room. Air purifiers can also work. They can catch allergens the dust mites feed on and discourage new mites from settling in the same area.

    Cedar

    • Cedar chips are commonly sold as a bedding for rabbits and dogs. These chips contain a toxin that repels various mites and other pests such as fleas. Fill a few cloth bags, about the size of pillow cases, with cedar chips. Seal them and place them in your room or around your bed. Do not let the chips come in direct contact with your skin as the toxin can cause skin irritation.

    Wool

    • Wool contains an organic chemical called lanolin, which does wonders to repel dust mites and circumvent the growth of mold or other allergens. Wool comforters in particular usually work well against mites, but the comforter will need to be washed with warm water at least once a week. As a general rule, regardless of what it's made of, wash all bedding in hot water (130 degree Fahrenheit) once a week. Only hot water will kill off the mites.

    Tannic Acid

    • Tannic acid is a white powder that helps neutralize allergens and pet dander in carpets. With no dander around, the dust mites will either die or leave to seek out other allergen sources. Tannic acid is available at health and pet stores.

    Latex Mattress Covers

    • Use mattress covers made of natural latex that completely seal around the mattress. The covers will block the mites from getting at the dead skin flakes and allergens they feed on. It will starve a large portion of any mites on the bed and prevent new dust mites from reaching the mattress fibers. You will need to damp dust the cover daily.
