How to Donate Your Car in Macomb County, Michigan
- 1). Select the charity to which you wish to donate your car. The Macomb County Habitat for Humanity Cars for Homes program collects vehicles for resale to fund the construction of homes in Macomb County. Other charitable organizations that accept car donations include The American Relief Fund, Kars 4 Kids and Cars Helping Veterans (see Resources).
- 2). Visit the charity's website to begin the donation process or contact the charity directly. Most charities prefer online donations to streamline the process, as well as for added convenience for donors. Information necessary to process the donation includes make and model of the vehicle, current mileage, list of required repairs and a lien-free title.
- 3). Schedule a time with the tow company for pickup of the vehicle. Through agreements made between the charity and Macomb County area towing companies, the donated vehicle will be towed at no cost to you. Upon pickup of the vehicle, the tow company provides a receipt for the vehicle. Keep this receipt for your records.
- 4). Store all documentation regarding the vehicle donation in a secure location for your records. In the event questions are raised about your donations, you will be required to show proof the donation was made. In approximately 10 to 14 days the charity will mail a 1098(c) form, which is required to claim the donation as a tax deduction. The value of the vehicle or $500, whichever is greater, can be claimed as a deduction if the donor files itemized deductions.
