How to: Baby Stitch Ditch Quilting
- 1). Cut out the squares for your quilt. You can make them any size you want; the larger the squares, the fewer you need. Large squares also require less sewing. Ensure all your squares are the same size by using a measuring tape.
- 2). Put your squares in the order you want. You will need a large surface for this; the floor or a large table work well.
- 3). Pin the first two squares from the top row together, right sides facing. Sew, using a ¼- inch seam. Take out the pins as you come to them, so you don't hit them with your needle.
- 4). Pin the third square from the same row to the second square you just sewed. Sew together. Repeat until the entire top row is sewn together. Sew all the squares into rows. Press each seam after you sew it.
- 5). Pin the top row to the second row, right sides facing. Match the seam lines as best as possible. Sew the two rows together with a ¼-inch seam. Add the third row, continuing until you have sewn all the rows together. Press your seams as you sew.
- 6). Trim all the seams and press again, being careful not to stretch the seams.
- 7). Cut batting and a backing fabric at least three inches larger than your quilt top. This allows for squaring the fabric once you have sandwiched the quilt together.
- 8). Lay the backing fabric on the floor, right side face down. Put the batting on top, followed by the quilt top. The right side of the quilt top should face up.
- 9). Pin the three layers together every two or three inches. You don't want it shifting while you quilt.

Begin in the middle of the quilt, stitch in the ditch of the seams. Working from the middle outward, stitch in the ditch for all of the seams. These are the seams you created by sewing the blocks together. At the end of each seam, back stitch to secure the thread and cut threads; begin a new seam. Continue until all the seams are sewn. - 11
Pin the binding around the quilt and sew using a matching thread. The binding wraps all the way around the quilt and covers the rough edges.
