How to Declutter Clothes

    • 1). Go through your closet. Remove all hanging items that no longer fit, you no longer like, or are no longer in style. Place these items in a large box or clean trash bag; you can donate them to charity or sell them. Do the same with clothes stored in containers and in drawers. Creativehomemaking.com suggests that if you have not worn an item in a year, you should get rid of it.

    • 2). Set plastic storage bins in the center of the room. In these bins, place all neatly folded, off-season clothes that will fit inside. You can store the bins on the floor of your closet, under your bed, or, as suggested by onlineorganizing.com, in another area of your home. Avoid damp areas, however, such as the basement.

    • 3). Assign space in dresser drawers for particular items, and put only those designated items in each drawer. For example, one drawer can be for undergarments, one for tank tops, one for shorts, and one for socks. You can further organize drawers into subcategories. One end of the sock drawer can hold dress socks, and the other end, sport socks.

    • 4). Place all shoes on a shoe tree, in a hanging shoe bag, or in shoe boxes. If you place them in shoe boxes, label each box on the outside: "black pumps" or "white sneakers," for example (unless you still have the original boxes).

    • 5). Use colored plastic hangers in your closet. For example, use blue hangers for work clothes, red hangers for evening wear, black hangers for casual wear, and green hangers for accessories such as scarves and ties.

    • 6). Divide the closet space itself into sections. Clothes hanging the farthest out of your easy reach should be clothes you do not wear often (special occasion dresses and suits, for example). Work clothes and casual clothes should be grouped together in separate sections.

    • 7). Group clothes of the same color together. This way, if you are looking for a teal shirt to go with brown pants, you won't have to search through every shirt and every pair of pants. Also, if you typically pair certain items together, place these items near each other in your closet.
