- 1). Remove the old backsplash. Remove any leftover adhesive from the wall. Clean the wall thoroughly with a mixture of detergent and water, allowing it to dry fully before installing the new backsplash.
- 2). Determine where you want the backsplash to run. Decide if it will stretch above all of the kitchen cabinets or just near the sink. Determine the height of the backsplash. Take measurements of the length and height of the area to calculate the tiling materials needed.
- 3). Consider the overall style of the kitchen to select tiles for the backsplash. Choose a color, style and size for the tiles. Determine if any decorative tiles with pictures or raised designs will go into the backsplash.
- 4). Calculate the square footage of the backsplash area. Use this calculation to purchase the number of tiles needed to complete the project. Most tile options are priced and packaged by the square foot even if the tiles themselves aren't 12 inches by 12 inches. Purchase the grout and mortar to adhere the tiles to the wall.
- 5). Determine the layout of the tiles, particularly if you are adding accent tiles with raised designs or images. Space the decorated tiles evenly around the area with the plain tiles.
- 6). Apply the mortar with a notched trowel. Work in a small area, applying the mortar and then placing the tiles. Place the tiles on the wall, using the tile spacers to achieve a consistent result.
- 7). Allow the mortar to dry. Apply the grout to the tile lines. Clean the grout off of the tiles to finish the job.
