Marble, a metamorphic rock that develops under intense pressure and heat, has been used as a building material for thousands of years. Colored veins and a highly polished and luxurious appearance characterize marble. Properly caring for your marble floors will keep them looking newer longer and will prevent stains from developing. - Marble is porous and, therefore, susceptible to stains. To prevent stains from developing, the floor should be protected with a marble floor finished sealant. The finish should be applied every six months according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Because marble is porous, acidic foods often scratch it. Marble can even be stained if water is left on it for too long. To remedy this, remove all stains as soon as possible. Never use vinegar to clean stains, as it can strip the sealant from the surface of the marble. Always use neutral pH cleaners and soft cloths to clean stains.
- Avoid abrasive cleaning products such as wire brushes, metal sponges or stiff brooms that can scratch marble. Instead, wipe the floor with soft cloths, mops and flexible brooms.
- Place mats near near all doors to prevent tracking water, salt and dirt across the floor. Use mats with a waterproof backing to prevent water and other liquids from soaking through to the marble floor.
