How to Plant Some Fountain Grass Seed

    • 1). Choose a spot in full sun with loose, well-draining soil. Ornamental grasses will not grow well in heavy clay soil or where water does not drain quickly after a rain.

    • 2). Turn the soil over with the garden spade to a depth of 8 to 10 inches. This will loosen its texture, making it easier for the roots to grow and become established. Rake the surface smooth with the garden rake.

    • 3). Sow a small number of seeds, a dozen or two, in the center of the prepared site. Gently press them into the top of the soil with your hand. Sprinkle about 1/8 inch of soil over the top of them.

    • 4). Water the seedbed by spraying with a gentle mist from a hose-end sprayer. Check the seedbed daily and water as needed to keep it moist until the seeds germinate, in approximately seven to 14 days. Thereafter, water as needed to keep the soil evenly moist.

    • 5). Thin the seedlings when they are approximately 3-inches high so that about three to four remain, evenly spaced about 6 inches apart.

    • 6). Apply granulated 10-10-10 fertilizer when the seedlings are about a foot high. Following the manufacturer's recommended rates of application, sprinkle the fertilizer around the perimeter of the planting bed, without letting the granules touch the plants. Water the bed well with a hose-end sprayer or sprinkler.
