Instructions for a Hemp-Twine Macrame Plant Hanger
- Choose hemp-twine in a color that compliments the room in which the macrame plant hanger will be hanging, or in its natural color that will go with any decor. Calculate how much hemp-twine will be needed by first determining how long you want the finished hanger to be. If you want the finished plant hanger to be 45 inches long, multiply the finished length by four and double the result. So 4 x 45 = 180 x 2 = 360 inches or about 10 yards. You will need 16 cords, so cut eight 10-yard cords or 80 yards plus a yard for wrapping the ring for a total of 81 yards.
- Cut one yard of hemp-twine and wrap it around a 2½-inch ring, Tie a Square knot when the ends meet to hold the hemp-twine in place. Fold the eight 10 yard cords and Butterfly the resulting 16 cords. Use rubber bands to keep the lengths manageable. Separate the cords into two groups and tie four inches of Crown knots.
Separate the cords into groups of four and tie 2½ inches of Half knots, using the two center cords as filler. Move down the hemp-twine 1½ inches and tie two inches of Square knots using the filler cord from the Half knots. Go down another 1½ inches and separate the cords into two groups of two cords each. Tie a Josephine knot in each group, then another 1½ inches below it.
Go down one inch and separate the cords into two groups of two. Tie alternating double Half Hitch knots on each group for four inches, then a Square knot. Move down and use the filler cord to tie a three Square knot button. One inch below that tie one Square knot and three inches of Lanyard knots. - Tie a Josephine knot four inches below the Lanyard knots and then two inches below that, tie a row of Square knot buttons. Adjust the space between the knots as necessary so that the pot you will be using in the hanger will fit properly. Leave three inches and use the longest cords to tie three Square knots around the other cords. Pull the hemp-twine tight and trim the remaining cords. Unbraid the ends and comb if desired.
