- 1). Study cults thoroughly. Read books and newspaper articles, watch documentary videos or even take a class about cults. It's important to have an intimate and thorough understanding of how cults function, why people are drawn to them and what makes it so difficult for people to leave a cult. If possible, consider interviewing or just meeting with counter-cult ministers or someone who has formerly been involved in a cult.
- 2). Talk to members of your church about your plan to start a new ministry. Ask for volunteers to help you with paperwork, organizing an outreach and counseling cult members. You can advertise your desire to start a ministry in your church newspaper or bulletin, or you can shoot a brief email to the body of your church asking for their support. Even if someone cannot physically volunteer to help with your ministry, ask for people to pray for your organization.
- 3). Determine what approach your ministry will take to approaching cultists and cult organizations. Perhaps you want to minister to members of a specific cult, or you might want to simply help as many cultists as you can, regardless of their current spiritual affiliation. Consider whether the best approach for your ministry is to show cult members how their current beliefs conflict with the Bible or whether it would be best to simply share your beliefs and let the cult members make their own decisions.
- 4). Prepare yourself for the possibility of physically helping out ex-cultists. Realize that many cultists have lost their possessions, their families and even their jobs in pursuit of a cult. If you help someone leave a cult, you need to be ready to help them find a new job and reintegrate themselves into society. If possible, ask church members for help temporarily hosting former cult members. Chances are, someone has an extra couch or an unused basement where cult members could stay temporarily while they get back on their feet.
