How to Split Clumps of Ornamental Grasses
- 1). Cut back the ornamental grass with a pair of pruning shears to within 4 to 6 inches of the ground.
- 2). Dig up the plant and roots. Knock off any excess soil. Wash the soil away from the roots with a hose.
- 3). Lay the grass clump on the ground and cut through the roots using a sharp spade. Divide the clump in half and then quarter.
- 4). Separate and dispose of any dead or diseased parts of the plant to ensure it has a healthy root system.
- 5). Replant one of the clumps back into its original location. Plant the remaining clumps in the garden or give them away to friends or neighbors. Keep the roots moist and in a shaded place if not replanting immediately.
- 6). Water the planted grass. Mulch with wood chips, bark or straw to control weeds and retain moisture.
