How to Remove a Gear Puller Steering Wheel in a '99 Explorer

    • 1). Open up the Explorer's hood and remove the battery's ground cable using a socket wrench. Allow three minutes to pass for the Explorer's airbags to deflate.

    • 2). Remove the two bolts from behind the steering wheel to lift off the airbag cover. Use a socket wrench to remove the bolts. Disconnect the airbag's electrical connection before removing it.

    • 3). Uninstall the Explorer's single securing bolt with a socket wrench. The bolt is located in the dead center of the steering wheel.

    • 4). Attach the gear puller to the steering wheel by pushing its middle portion where the securing bolt was and situating the arms around the steering wheel. Use the gear puller to lift the steering wheel off of the Explorer's steering column. To reattach the steering wheel, simply reverse the removal process.
