How to Reverse Female Hair Loss
- 1). Determine the cause of your hair loss. If you are experiencing hormonal changes or stress, you can try to make changes to your lifestyle to reduce stress. Talk to your doctor about what you can do to get your hormone levels back on track. Also, consider whether your family has a history with hair loss, as this can help you determine the best action to take with treatment.
- 2). Try a healthier diet. According to Dr. Michael Reed, an expert in female hair loss at NYU Medical Center, foods high in protein and low in carbohydrates, are beneficial to overall hair health. Samantha Heller, a nutritionist also at NYU Medical Center, suggests you introduce foods high in omega 3 fatty acids to your diet. These foods include: soy, canola oil, fish, and walnuts. She also recommends foods rich in iron, such as broccoli and brewer's yeast, because iron is often lacking in women during their reproductive years.
- 3). Stop dying your hair. Chemicals used in dying can cause hair to break off. Also avoid styles that cause your hair to be tightly pulled, such as braids, ponytails, and buns.
- 4). Speak to your doctor about introducing vitamin B12 supplements and biotin to your daily regimen. Dr. Ted Daly, a clinical professor of dermatology at Nassau University Medical Center, suggests that supplements may be necessary to restore levels and are capable of improving hair loss (See Ref. 2). He also prescribes up to 3mg of biotin for his hair loss patients, stating that it plays a major role in the hair manufacturing process (See also Ref. 2, page 2).
- 5). Consult with your physician or speak to a dermatologist about the potential effectiveness of minoxidil (Rogaine) for your specific type of hair loss. Minoxidil has displayed the ability to regrow hair in some women, while preventing further hair loss in others.
