How to Get a Driver's License in Indiana
- 1). Obtain a learner's permit by visiting an Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles office. Present proof of your age and identity, such as a passport or birth certificate, proof of residency such as a utility bill or voter's registration card (you'll need to present two documents) and your Social Security card.
- 2). Pass the written examination and pay the $9 fee (the amount as of February 2011; call to inquire about fees before you go to take the examination because fees may change at any time).
- 3). Complete 50 hours of supervised driving practice, at least 10 hours of which is done at night. You can do your supervised driving practice with a licensed driving instructor, any licensed driver over the age of 24 or with your spouse, if your spouse is a licensed driver at least 21 years old.
- 4). Schedule a driving test by contacting an Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles office.
- 5). Arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled driving test appointment. Present the same documents you presented when you obtained your learner's permit and present your learner's permit.
- 6). Pass the vision screening test. If you do not pass the vision screening test, you will be referred to an optometrist for an examination.
- 7). Pass both the driving test and the written examination.
- 8). Pay the $21 fee (the amount as of February 2011 for adult drivers; drivers under the age of 18 must pay only $16 for a probationary license) to obtain your Indiana driver's license.
