How to Install Crash Bars

    • 1). Lay out the entire contents of your crash bar kit. Take an inventory of the replacement bolts, crash bars and brackets included in the kit and check it against the parts list provided in the installation instructions.

    • 2). Clean the mounting areas on the motorcycle's frame and engine mounts with soap and water to remove any dirt or oil. Wipe dry with a shop towel.

    • 3). Install any mounting brackets, as directed by the installation instructions, onto the motorcycle's frame. Typically, a bracket is installed between the frame down tubes, which extend down from below the front fork's steering pivot, to support the upper portion of the crash bar. Tighten the bracket mounting bolts loosely, using a socket wrench. Skip this step if brackets are not required by your motorcycle.

    • 4). Unscrew the engine mount bolts from one side of the motorcycle, using a socket wrench. Place the corresponding crash bar onto the motorcycle, placing it over the engine mounts or mounting brackets. Screw the extended mounting bolts -- provided in the kit -- into the engine mounts and tighten them loosely using a socket wrench.

    • 5). Install the remaining crash bar, following the method shown above.

    • 6). Adjust the crash bars until they are aligned evenly with the frame and their brackets, if any. Tighten all mounting bolts completely, using a socket wrench.
