- 1). Enjoy working with others. You will be working one on one or closely with a small group of people who need your help, respect and patience.
- 2). Decide what subjects you want to teach. Earn a grade of B or higher in classes you want to tutor, or test out of those classes. Brush up on your skills in that area. You have to know your subject and be able to communicate it to others. You should also have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
- 3). Submit an application to the Iowa university you're interested in tutoring through. Attach at least one reference from an instructor, advisor, employer, or other university staff member. Attend an orientation if required. Use your tutoring experience to add work experience to your resume, to review courses important to your major, or to review for MCAT, GRE, or GMAT tests.
- 4). Find out how much other Iowa tutors charge and set your rates accordingly. Since Iowa State University student tutors are paid $8.00 an hour, you don't want to set your rates too low. Iowa State tutors who have completed a four year degree earn $9.00 an hour, so if you're tutoring in that location, you don't want to set your rates too high.
- 5). Talk to the student about what goals they want to meet and make visible progress toward those goals in each session. After the first few sessions, you and your student may decide additional sessions are needed.
- 6). Decide when and where you and the student will meet for tutoring sessions. Have reliable transportation and carry a cell phone so you and the student can communicate if something comes up and you have to cancel or meet somewhere else.
- 7). Advertise your availability for tutoring. Hang up flyers with tabs containing your phone number, place a classified ad, or sign up with an online tutoring agency.
