- 1). Locate areas of high squirrel activity. If squirrels frequently are around your house, you can probably put the trap nearly anywhere by your house and attract them with bait. Otherwise, squirrels can be found in treed areas where they can find nuts and seeds to eat.
- 2). Place the live trap at the base of a tree.
- 3). Open the door of the trap and attach it to the roof of the trap with the metal piece that's designed for that purpose.
- 4). Sprinkle bait on the side of the trap pan opposite the trapdoor. Birdseed works well for attracting squirrels, as does peanut butter. You want the animal to step on the trap pan, which releases the door and captures the critter.
- 5). Sprinkle bait leading into the trap.
