There is little doubt that the cost of food is going way up and the money to buy it isn't.
Hamburger is one meat though that you can do tons with and it really goes a long way.
In fact it can be most filling if you are creative with it so it doesn't take as much to fill the tummies of a large family.
Here are few hints on how you can make some hamburger meals that will still keep you queen of the kitchen but a few more pennies in your pocket.
Buying extra lean hamburger is always the wisest choice but some people simply cannot afford it.
To prevent regular ground beef from being too greasy the first thing I do is put it in a non stick fry pan and break it up in small pieces.
Then I cover it hot water and gently boil it till the water is completely gone.
You can then pour any grease that is left out of the pan.
If it still seems greasy you can repeat this measure.
One this is done then fry the meat in a dry pan stirring it constantly so it doesn't stick.
Once it has become brown it is now quiet dry so you are going to want to add some moisture to it as well as flavor.
You can take a package of dry onion soup mix and add two cups of water to this and stir well.
Then add this to the meat, and let it simmer on low.
At this time add your salt and pepper and any other seasonings that you like as well.
Make a thin paste out of some flour and water and after you have brought the water and meat to a boil, add the thin flour paste to it so it will thicken.
You will now have a great hamburger dish with onion gravy that tastes great.
If you want using the above method you can make a double batch.
This is a real money saver if hamburger has been on sale.
With the above recipe there are some great variations that you can do with it.
Make a pie shell or purchase a pre made one and bake it.
Let it cool then fill the pile shell with a hot batch of hamburger that you made using the above recipe.
Grate some cheese and cover the top of the meat so you have a thin layer of cheese cover the top of your pie.
Bake it in the oven for about 15 minutes just so the cheese is melted and the meat is hot.
Now you have a fantastic cheeseburger pie.
