Singing the Blues and Feeling the Funk Feeling down and despondent? Up for a few tips on getting you through that aching melancholy? Your preventative health care plan should always include some tips for a little cup of pick-me-up.
Blues and funk...
music with roots for a reason.
First, take comfort as everyone sports these spells.
Yes, even those perma-grin, quote-toting motivational gurus.
Second, try distracting yourself until that something else attracts your full attention.
A winner.
Third, steer clear of the all-knowing, advice-afflicted "Everything will be OK" singsongers who wait with baited breath simply to prepare to unload their own baggage.
You may be tempted to flick them upside the head but do try to refrain lest you saddle yourself with a hefty host of other troubles to boot.
I am not making light.
Well perhaps a beam or two.
Granted, it is tough to be down and it can readily cycle into feeling "let down".
Life can be rough and quite frankly often a pain in the donkey.
However, laughter and simplicity are packaged little miracles and being silly can remind us just how silly and sweet life can be.
Instead of lashing out or bringing others down with you, it might behoove you to spend some time alone finding sweet satisfaction in unraveling the mysteries you never seem to make time for such as:
  1. With painstaking effort, review the grocery flyers that hit your mailbox every week.
Not only will you be prepared for your "Price is Right" debut should the opportunity arise, you will be poised to contribute valuable purchasing decision influence the next time you are asked to prep for a joyous group gathering.
  2. Literally stop and smell the roses.
You can kill a good hour on just one bed.
Head for the gardens and you can write off a whole afternoon.
  3. Check out public radio or community TV.
If seemingly incoherent hosts and guests can function in this world, so too can we.
You muse "Wonder what life is like for that twisted sister and trippy brother?" and come away feeling quite proud of everything and anything you have done in the last 24 hour period.
It is peculiar how swell this tactic works.
  4. Conduct normal mundane activities with an excruciating amount of leisure and reflection.
A few personal favorites: studying the contents of your fridge, dusting, flossing, nose hair removal.
  5. Just start skipping.
Alas, just before you embark upon a study of lint, your funk will have passed or at least subsided somewhat as you come back to balance and appreciation for yourself and the world as it is.
In each scenario you can take credit for "doing something" to alleviate the discomfort and as we have noted these methods reek of productivity so you've got that going for you as well.
"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.
" (Charles Dickens) Such is this time called life.
