Garden Pond Parasites
- Remove any fish that show signs of parasites from the pond and place them in quarantine. For anchor worms, bath the fish in a potassium permanganate solution so the parasites release their hold on the fish's tissue, and then remove the worms. For other parasites, such as costia, gill maggots, yellow grub, flukes and fish lice, you'll need to use water additive treatments.
- Regularly stir the pond water with a net to scoop out debris that accumulates on the pond's bottom. Debris makes an ideal breeding ground for parasites. At least once per year, drain the pond completely of all water and remove the debris.
- Clean the pond pump so it continues to work properly. The pond's filtration system helps prevent parasites from occurring. Always maintain clean filter medium to ensure the water remains clean. Consider adding barley straw to the pond to help reduce algae overgrowth.
