How do I Troubleshoot a Poulan Chainsaw With Not Enough Oil to the Chain?
- 1). Unfasten the bar nuts with the wrench. Twist the bar tensioner screw clockwise to relieve tension on the chain. Pull the clutch cover, guide bar and chain off the engine.
- 2). Separate the chain from the guide bar. Clean the slots on the guide bar with the knife. Scrape the tip of the knife down the length of the bar to remove built-up sawdust, oil and dirt. Clean both sides.
- 3). Clean the guide bar's two oiler holes, which sit at the rear of the bar. Use the tip of the knife to clean them out. Spin the front nose sprocket on the guide bar to make sure it has enough lubrication. Lubricate the front nose sprocket if it doesn't spin freely. Replace the guide bar if the nose sprocket is damaged or bent.
- 4). Drain all of the oil from the tank into an approved fuel container. Wrap the rag over the brush head. Clean the oil tank with the rag and brush head. Pour in about a teaspoon of gas. Close the cap and stir up the gas inside the tank. Open the tank and pour out the gas to remove any sawdust or dirt, which may be clogging your vent or suction hose.
- 5). Reach into the tank and pull out the oil suction hose with the needle-nosed pliers. Continue holding the suction hose while you pull out the pickup body from the end of the hose. Clean the pickup body with the white spirit. Replace pickup body if it is damaged. Set the suction hose and pickup body back into the tank.
- 6). Fill the oil tank with fresh oil and screw the cap on. Unscrew the oiler plate, which is next to the bar posts, with the screwdriver. Wipe the oiler plate clean with the rag. Wipe the area around the worm drive clean with the rag.
- 7). Start the chainsaw with the bar and chain still off. Let the engine idle for 30 seconds to warm up. Squeeze the throttle and check for a small dribble of oil to come out of the oiler nipple. If no oil is present, you likely have a worn out bore on your oil pump drive, which should only be replaced by a qualified mechanic.
