Save Energy, Save the World
There is a lot of talk about the environment and the effects of current energy methods on it. If we are careful and start looking to alternative energy sources we can save energy and, in effect, save the world. We have to stop taking the environment for granted and start improving the way we do things. For years now we have focused only on our wants and needs and not on the needs of the environment, the supplier of all our modern conveniences. If we cannot change our selfish ways, the earth will not have much hope of providing energy to generations to come. It's time to stop talking and start acting. Making small changes to renewable energy is just the beginning, and we must continue moving forward towards energy independence. Not only will we be self-reliant, but we will help our environment and make it healthier for many generations.
What happens when we produce electricity? Sulphur dioxide is released into the atmosphere contributing to acid rain. NOx emissions are releases, creating smog. Carbon is emitted and contributes to global warming. Mercury is released into the air putting our health at high risks. These are just a few of the impacts felt from the factories that mine coal and other resources and process them to produce electricity.
Energy companies claim that they cannot effectively meet new clean coal standards in America and other countries due to the cost to fix their current systems. They make billions of dollars each year, but they don't want to lose any of their precious profits to help the people and the environment. As consumers, we should demand this change. It is better for us and our future. We need to think about our children and grandchildren and the world we are leaving to them. Surely companies would have no problem converting their systems if the people paid for it right? The thing is, we already do pay their salaries and their costs. The money made from the use of electricity is an unprecedented amount, and that amount is only climbing.
As a citizen, there are many small things you can do to conserve energy and help the Earth. Making simple adjustments to your home is the best way to start. Some things you can do are replace windows with better insulated ones, plant shade trees, and weatherize your home. This will save you money and help the environment in the process. You can also make changes to your appliances for those with a better energy usage rating. Little things like turning the refrigerator temperature down, running a full dishwasher, and turning down your water heater can save you hundreds every year.
Making small investments now can save you hundreds in the long run and lower your carbon footprint immediately. Energy-efficient light bulbs may seem expensive, but they save in the long run and do not need replacing as often as traditional bulbs. Even changing just one bulb saves 260 pounds of CO2 each year.
